Speech Marks

This week I have been learning how to add in speech marks.

WALT: use speech marks
Remember to:
Put speech marks around the talking– what is being said.
A new speaker starts on a new line.
Punctuation (full stops, commas etc) go inside the speech marks.

Direct Speech - Speech Marks

Speech marks (or inverted commas) show when someone is talking. You will see them written in books as speech or speech.

Task One
Put the speech marks in the correct places. Remember: The speech marks go around what is being said.

1   “Hello,” said the man.

  1. “What are you doing? “said Fred.

  1. “Stop!” shouted the policeman.

  1. “Wait a minute,” said Mark. “Don’t I know you from somewhere?”

  1. “I know what we’ll do,” said  Lucy. “We’ll go to the pictures.”
